If any of you are debaters, you should've known this term.
Yes, it is one of the most prestigious national English debating competition.
If you don't know what it is, let's just say it's the English-counterpart of OSN.
Disdikpora held this event annually to select the national champion among the 33 provinces in the archipelago, and to compose a brand-new team from the whole participant. It's Team Indonesia, that will be sent to compete in the world's most prestigious high school debating competition, the World Schools Debating Championship.
As you may know, I am one of the participant of NSDC 2011. Together with Ian and Bika, we are Team Bali.
We are confident enough in this competition.
Well, we don't really say that we're going to win the whole thing, but we're confident enough that we're going to be able to go far in this comp.
Why? because we had just won ALSA National English Competition 2011, another prestigious national debate tournament.
But with that confidence, comes a burden.
I'm afraid to lose. I'm burdened with the title of Champion and Best Speaker.
Anyway, when we compete at the Nationals, it started out a bit rough.
We kept on under-performing , we don't think our debate is good enough to achieve good scores.
But luckily, our team manage to win 5 out of 5 rounds in the preliminary, and manage to break through the preliminary round, and gained the First Position among the 16 team that will proceed to the Elimination round.
We swept cleanly until the final round.
Yes, the final round.
We met Aceh at the final.
And they're good.
Sadly enough, we lost at the final. There were 9 judges at the final. 4 voted for us, while 5 voted for them.
It's a shame. Big time. I'm ashamed of myself.
Why? Because we met Aceh already. Twice. Firstly at the Mock Round, and secondly at the 3rd Preliminary Round. We won both of them.
It gives us more burden and expectation from our coach and teacher that we should've won the finals as well.
But most importantly, I'm ashamed that I'm unable to perform maximally at the final.
I knew I could do better. I messed up everything in the final.
But a new hope sparked. All three of team Bali managed to secure positions at the Top 5 Speakers of NSDC, with Ian as the First, Bika as the Third, and me as the Fifth Best Speakers.
Remember when I told you about composing Team Indonesia? Well, the team will be selected among the 24 Best Speakers, not team.
Seeing how successful we are on -speaker-wise, it gives me a new hope. That we have a BIG chance of going to South Africa.
Disappointed? I am. Terribly.
I cried many times. When seeing IndoDebate, when chatting with my friends, when hearing other people's opinion about the final round. It broke me down.
But it won't change anything.
Therefore I'm going to keep on moving forward. I can't guarantee that I won't break down again, but I can guarantee that I won't back down.
We have gone too far, now the only thing we can do is to set our goal even further.
Therefore, I proudly present:
BALI
The Runner-Up and Best Speaker of NSDC 2011
Thank you for reading.
